How do you test ad creative before you spend budget on it?
Updated
Short answer
Run three checks. First, review each ad against a fixed checklist: hook, offer, proof, call to action and mobile readability. Second, get a structured second opinion that explains why each part works or fails. Third, launch a small, controlled test that changes one variable, so live spend confirms or rejects what the review predicted.
Why review before you spend
Live results are the only proof of performance, but they cost money and time. A weak ad in an ad set takes impressions and budget from stronger ones while delivery is still learning.
A pre-launch review catches the failures you can see without spending anything: a hook that starts too slowly, an offer you cannot read on a phone, a claim with no proof behind it.
What to check on every ad
- Opening: does the first frame or line give the right viewer a reason to stop scrolling?
- Offer: after one view, can someone say what is sold and why it is worth it?
- Proof: is there a reason to believe, such as a demonstration, a review or a result the brand can substantiate?
- Call to action: is the next step clear, and does it match the landing page?
- Format: does text stay readable at phone size and inside the safe zones for Reels and Stories?
- Brand and claims: is the brand recognisable, and is every claim supported?
How to run the live test
Change one major variable at a time when you want to learn why an ad won. For example, test two hooks on the same body, offer and landing page.
Decide the primary metric and the stop rule before launch, so nobody reinterprets the result afterwards.
Give each variant enough delivery to judge it. Meta's Business Help Center says an ad set generally needs about 50 optimization events within 7 days of its last significant edit to exit the learning phase. Tests that end far short of that rarely tell you much.
What a pre-launch review cannot tell you
It cannot predict results. Performance depends on audience, offer, placement, timing, landing page and competition. Use review to remove obvious weaknesses and to choose which ideas deserve budget, then let live data decide.
Where Critiqa fits
Critiqa analyzes image and video ads before launch across 16 creative performance dimensions. It returns strengths, priority fixes and a recommended next action. It is a structured second opinion and does not guarantee performance.
